Abstract: The emerging social networks like Facebook and Twitter with their huge popularity produce a strong impact to our life. The study of human emotions by means of bioelectrical signals and psychometrics has a long history, but the data for an influence of Web-based social networks is still scarce and specific methods are lacking. We tried to assemble an ad-hoc methodology for exploring emotions of a Facebook pilot group of users implementing time-frequency spectral analysis (based on S-transform) and rhythm dynamics characteristics representation of a complex set of recorded bioelectrical signals with parallel psychometric tests. The spectral nature of the studied signals suggests correlation with the emotions of the Facebook users. The obtained initial results have shown that the assembled methodology for bioelectrical signals' recording and analysis might be a valuable tool for the study of impact of social networks on human emotions and facilitation of IT developments assessment and control in the information society.

Stiliyan Georgiev, Zlatogor Minchev, Christina Christova, Dolja Philipova, Gender Event-related Brain Oscillatory Differences in Normal Elderly Population EEG, Int. J. Bioautomation, vol. 15, Issue 1, 2011, 33-48, Read more..

Abstract: In most of the scientific publications the data on gender related EEG differences is connected to exploration of disease or abuse-related changes and so takes the gender only as a cofactor. Although no one argues the fact, that gender is one of the greatest factors, influencing EEG results, there is a small number of papers discussing predominantly the gender influence on EEG. That is why the aim of this work is to try to examine the event-related oscillatory differences between a group of male and female individuals being a part of the normal elderly population. We calculated the Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) in time domain, the absolute Fourier power spectrum and S-transform for time-frequency analysis. The reaction times to auditory target stimuli were also calculated and compared. As a result of the present study we found that our female individuals have shown a significantly larger absolute theta and beta1 spectral power compared to male and having a larger N1 and higher P2 event-related potential components. In contrast to these, the male individuals have shown a stronger theta to beta coupling compared to the female individuals.

Abstract: We studied the fractal dynamics of postural sway during quiet stance with changed visual and/or proprioceptive information. Radius-vector length and angle of rotation of center of foot pressure (COP) displacements were used as parameters of postural sway. The experiments were performed on 24 healthy volunteers of both sexes aged 20-30 years. Using a battery of nonlinearity tests, differences in the degree of fractality of both parameters during stance were found. We found that the behavior of radius-vector was similar to fractional Brownian motion, while that of angle of rotation was similar to flicker noise. Quantitative parameters that can be used to characterize the changes in radius-vector length and angle of rotation include self-similarity intervals and fractal dimension. In healthy subjects, the process of postural control maintains its fractal structure independently of altered sensory information. We believe that this analysis provides information about new methods for evaluating postural sway behaviour during quiet stance. Read more...
